Obesity is not just an increase in weight; it is a disease that can lead to serious health complications. In the first episode of the Dawaa Talk podcast, we spoke with Dr. Naif Al-Anazi, a consultant in obesity surgery, about the risks of obesity and the best ways to manage it.

Why is Obesity a Health Concern?

Dr. Naif emphasized that obesity is linked to numerous health issues, including:

  • High blood pressure

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • High cholesterol and triglycerides

  • Infertility and reduced fertility in both men and women

  • Sleep apnea

  • Increased risk of certain types of cancer

He pointed out that awareness alone is not enough; there needs to be a shift in societal culture to recognize obesity as a real disease that requires treatment.

How is Obesity Classified?

Obesity is measured using the Body Mass Index (BMI), calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height squared (m²). The classifications are as follows:

  • 25 - 29.9: Overweight

  • 30 - 34.9: Obesity (Class 1)

  • 35 - 39.9: Obesity (Class 2)

  • 40 and above: Severe obesity

Dr. Naif highlighted that many people mistakenly believe weight alone determines obesity, whereas BMI should always be used for an accurate assessment.

Weight Loss Injections: Are They Effective?

Dr. Naif discussed weight loss injections, which were initially developed for treating type 2 diabetes but have proven effective in reducing appetite and promoting weight loss. The most common types include:

  • Daily injections, administered in gradually increasing doses each week.

  • Weekly injections, which have shown effective weight loss results.

However, he stressed that these injections are not suitable for everyone. A doctor should be consulted before use, and users should drink plenty of water and exercise to avoid side effects like nausea and headaches.

When is Gastric Sleeve Surgery the Best Solution?

Dr. Naif explained that surgical intervention may be the best option for individuals who:

  • Have a BMI higher than 40.

  • Suffer from conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

  • Have tried diets and exercise without achieving significant results.

However, he emphasized that surgery is not an easy option and should only be considered after unsuccessful attempts with other weight-loss methods.

How to Prevent Obesity?

According to Dr. Naif, preventing obesity requires long-term commitment. He recommended the following steps:

  • Walking for 30 minutes daily.

  • Reducing sugar and bread intake.

  • Drinking enough water to stay hydrated.

  • Regulating meal times by having three main meals with healthy snacks.

  • Avoiding random eating habits and reducing fast food consumption.

Obesity is not just about excess weight; it is a disease that must be taken seriously. The solution begins with recognizing the problem and then adopting a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet and physical activity. If you are struggling with obesity, consult your doctor to explore the best available options for you.
